IMU Ball 2010 : Audacieux @ Royale Chulan

20 Apr

Previously, I blogged about the IMU Ball ’08 (Sensationale Symphony) & the IMU Ball ’09 (Clair de Lune).

This time around, it’s my ball, the IMU Ball 2010 : AUDACIEUX / dare to be, held at the Taming Sari Ballroom, Royale Chulan, Kuala Lumpur. :))) Carries a lot of significance and great memories. Of time spent in this little, converted shopping-mall-of-a-place for two and a half years, mugging medical books.

Yawshing’s 21st & The Opera @Sunway

15 Jan

Yawshing’s 21st is actually on the 19th of Jan, but he decided to celebrate it early since next week was going to be GP postings back in Penang for him.

He cleaned up well! :) The nine of us (including Mira’s boyfriend) had a lovely dinner at Monte’s @Bangsar Shopping Center. Monte’s is a restaurant & wine bar, which I think has food that is pretty good value for money. It’s not exorbitant, but prices are to be expected for a place like that. Portions were okay. Wasn’t feeling too hungry, so I just had the carrot & pumpkin soup along with the chicken & mushroom spaghetti off of the kids’ menu. Both were pretty good–the soup was sweet and creamy, and the spag was just right as well as just the right amount. Didn’t get jelak. :)

Yes, we medics know how to have fun. ;) Apparently it’s a Tamil (or Hindu? sorry, not very good at this stuff) tradition to feed the family cake after you blow the candles and cut it… And feed he did, lol. I left early to catch the late dregs of cell, so not quite sure what happened after that. However, I did meet up with them later at The Opera, a new club at Sunway that we decided to check out.

The Long-awaited Night Out

6 Jun

Went to Luna Bar & Bar Celona–both for the first time, with Matt and his two friends, Hansel & Vincent. We were joined briefly by his friend, Benji, who left to go for this TAG event at Barsonic. Jo & Jon came for a while too, then they left to eat and sleep. Photos can be found here.

Never have I spent so much in one night! :((((

I hereby declare that I will only go out on ladies’ night in the future… It’s soooo expensive! No wonder people get broke going clubbing, ugh. For people like me, who go to dance, cover is just killer. Ladies’ night ftw.

The view from our table at Luna Bar.

Seriously, thanks, Matt, for getting my drink at Luna. :) I really liked the atmosphere there–pity we couldn’t sit by the pool or a window. We still got a pretty good seat, though. It’s got a nice view of KL city, has a pool in the center, was quite windy despite part of it being outdoors, and had nice mood music. It feels like a nice, intimate place where you don’t really want to bring a large group. On any other day, I would have been content just to stay there…

Ltr: Matt, Hansel & moi being pose-y.

Ltr: Matt, Hansel & moi being pose-y.

But I wanted to dance. :P Bar Celona started out being dodgy. Cover charge was HIKED because it was a “public holiday” the next day, and they only gave us beers as the free drink. :( Boo. I don’t like beer. Then, the music they were playing was really un-danceable and gangsta when we walked in, but we tried dancing for a bit. Thankfully, the music got better–or I’d have been really annoyed and felt like I wasted my money on paying cover.

New pet peeve: people who STAND on the dancefloor and take up space. Honestly. There was this dude who just stood in the middle of the dancefloor, with his eyes closed, nodding and smiling to the beat. Hello, dancefloor = DANCE LAH!

The night yielded a few interesting moments… And was a nice end to the week. Not as exciting as I expected, but good nonetheless! Thank you, Matt, for organizing the night and calling all of us. :) Sorry the hat thing didn’t work out, and sorry you had to give up going for the TAG Barsonic old-school rock event. Make it up to you later! Back to CVS + Respi + Hemato + GIT tomorrow…

CNY ’09 : Moo-ness, Money, Music & Mingling

10 Feb

Now that CNY is fully over, as promised, here is my massive catchup post about Chinese New Year and the wonderful times I’ve had so far. Unfortunately, the holidays are over, and it’s back to CVS and reality…

I’m having problems with posting pictures in wordpress, so there will be none here…

This year was more relaxed than the last, but we visited a lot of houses! A typical CNY for me would have the first three days filled up with visiting relatives (and collecting the redly-packaged blessings, hehe).

First day saw me decked out in a white cheongsam with blue trimmings–it’s actually one of mum’s new cheongsams, but she let me have it. Thanks mum! Second day, I wore my mum’s dress (the same one she wore to the marriage registry yeaaaaars ago). Third day was a new beachy dress I picked up from Monizal, a boutique in Amcorp Mall. It’s awesome being the same size and height as your mum, haha.

I made it a point to take as many pictures of the festivities and fellowship at the different houses this year, because when I looked back at last year’s CNY pics, they were few and far in between. No vibrancy, no energy, no stories hidden within them. SO this year, I have many many more candids, and I rallied more family to take photos together. :) We also visited my mum’s side of the extended family tree for the first time–my maternal grandfather’s sister-in-law, who lives in Kundang, which is on the way to Rawang. I discovered a bunch more cousins I’d never met before in my life…

Besides that, my elder cousins on my dad’s side saw it fit to begin passing down the skills of chor dai di (big two). Haha! Kong Jin & Kong Qian taught my younger cousin, Kok Weng, how to play. :P And there was another cute kid that was the son of one of the other relatives who came to play… His dad also was coaching him. Dai tao har la, all these people! But it was all in good fun. Kong Qian kept bringing up the notion of playing with money, but it didn’t happen. Awwww.

Once again, it was food overload. One of the dangers of CNY is that if you don’t regulate your snacking at every house you visit, you’re bound to gain a lot of unwanted physical bonuses by the end of the celebrations. Cellulite anyone? x__x Economic recession my FOOT, because we were still fed extremely well at each house we visited! There was abundant yee sang, pineapple tarts, cookies, har pang, nga ku, steamboat, mandarin oranges, vegetarian dishes, noodles, ice cream, savoury treats… Whoo. I had to restrain myself from over-eating, even though ALL the foods that pop up during CNY are among my favorites.

Ang pau earnings were a larger haul than before. :) Hooray for being unmarried & Chinese! Let me ask you this, though. ;) What does a girl do with all the extra pocketmoney she received?

Give up? :)))

Well… Click to read more.

Quattro @ Avenue K

13 Nov

Got to go on Tuesday night, 11th of Nov. But because I’m a lazy blogger, I only updated now! Hahaha. :) What an night it was! Before heading there, Tuck Lam, Minny & I went to Sushi Tomo in SS2 to grab a little bite. She & I had some maki, and he had chicken teppanyaki. The portions were small and the prices were expensive. :( We thought we’d try it, since that restaurant had always been around, and we’d never gone there… I think that would be the first AND last time we’ll step foot into that restaurant. I don’t recommend it at all, even for something light.

After dropping Minny at home, we then headed down to IMU to meet Kyle and Premi… Whereupon we discovered that Emmy had lost her wallet :(( and couldn’t come with us. She lost everything, apparently it got pickpocketed!! Sadly, the likelihood of her being able to get it back is close to zero, even though most of us would want to be optimistic about it. Unless a miracle occurs…

We reached Quattro around 10.30pm, then waited for a while for Cecilia and her friends to arrive from dinner in KLCC. Zaeem and JP came later, as did Amar, Usamah, and a whole bunch of other Malay dudes from IMU.

The place was definitely smaller than I thought it would be, but I guess being a club in KL–you dont have much space for however much rent you pay. The Spring Lounge and the Summer Restaurant are out front, so they’re the first things you see! We didn’t really go into the restaurant, but looked from the outside. It had a yellowy decor and looked warm. The lounge had many sakura motifs and pink lighting to match the theme.

To get to the Autumn Club, you have to walk through a Raining Pathway! Haha, I didn’t think it would really rain at first when I saw it, but they had umbrellas at both ends of the pathway. It rains every hour in the pathway, so like jakuns we set alarms on our cellphones so we could catch the rain, LOL. Cecilia and my umbrella had a HOLE in it but we didn’t notice until after, so we got soaked!! Arrrrgghhh. The back of my dress and my hair was so wet–I got so cold for a while, but warmed up when I dried off.

If you go upstairs (take the stairs or the escalator outside the club), you will arrive at the Winter Bar, where we discovered a Winter Garden, of a concept similar to the Raining Pathway. It snows in the Garden every half-hour, apparently… not every hour like the sign says. The “snow”, as we discovered, was really just cold, OILY foam!!! After getting it in our hair and all over our hands, we had to go clean up, lol.

The music there was pretty good–Rn’B and hip hop, and it wasn’t too smoky; I could still breathe. I didn’t come home smelling too strongly of smoke, so that’s always a good thing! The interior decor of all four sections of the club was very simple, and they adhered to the season themes mainly by use of colored lights. Everything seemed to carry a very Japanese-y overtone, though. :) Noh mask for the Autumn Club symbol, anyone?

I think I’d go there again–but it’s the people that made it fun. :) Our own dancefloor, haha! But if I were to compare Euphoria to Quattro… I don’t knowwww! I still love Euphoria‘s dancefloor. :)) Dancing over drinking, baby!

Photos are up and loaded, on my facebook! It takes SO LONG to upload and post photos on this wordpress blog (because it’s uber laggy), so from now on, posts on big outings will carry links to the facebook album-unless something’s so priceless I HAVE to upload it here. <3

You can see shots from my camera here, and more shots from Cecilia’s camera here and here. Have a gander, if you please. ;)

Results are coming out tomorrow!! I can’t wait–will finally have that thought out of my head.
