David Gomes Jazz Band @ Groove Junction

Aside from missing the turnoff and paying toll twice on the Kerinchi Link before finally locating Groove Junction at its cozy 1st-floor nook in Sri Hartamas, it was a great night spent listening to smooth, smooth, groovy jazz. The David Gomes Jazz Band, featuring Junji Delfino, with special guest drummer Hong from Bangkok, and guest guitarist Jose Thomas.

Not such a great photo, but the best of the lot.

Not such a great photo, but the best of the lot.

I was actually fairly tired and a little upset from the IMU’s Got Talent semifinals, mostly due to how it dragged on and had some less-than-satisfactory performances tonight, so I didn’t want to go at first. However, Steven, Jon, Raymond, Cheryl and David were already there, and I had nothing else to do… So I got directions and with great trepidation, drove there.

Even though I arrived late and circled the area a few times for a parking space, the show hadn’t begun. :) It started about 15 minutes after I got in. Saw Weili, the violinist from SIB, there as well. He grew out his hair, so I couldn’t recognize him at all! He had to jog my memory of who he was…

When the band began, I think I fell in love with jazz all over again. Sigh. :)) I hadn’t listened to live jazz since the Saskatoon Jazz Festival in 2006, so this was well and truly a treat as well as a jog down memory lane.

Didn’t know most of the songs they played, but I loved every moment of it. I did know “Misty”, and “I’m in the Mood for Love”, though. The room pulsed with their energy, and you could see how the band absolutely loved the stuff they were doing. And loved each other, too. Great chemistry and communication! Seriously. :)

GREAT STUFF THAT I ASPIRE TO DO SOMEDAY. D:

Junji Delfino. Fantastic vocals and expression. Stunning improv soloing! Wow. I loved it. David Gomes. Is there anything he can’t do with those black ‘n white keys? Jose Thomas. Oh my worrd, this man and his guitar are on fireee. That smile on his face could only mean love for the jazz groove. Wan on bass. Smooth, understated soloing. And Hong from Bangkok on drums–driving everything along with amazing beats and solos. So conversational. So casual. So jazz.

:) Can you tell I had a good time?

————————————–

Anyway. Just a quick overview of IMU’s Got Talent and the rest of my day prior to the superb ending. Began the plans for the upcoming Noise & Movement event in April, then helped a little with the move down to the BRAND SPANKING NEW MUSIC ROOM @ LG floor. Judged the IMU’s got Talent semifinals, which were “meh”. Only a few people really stood out, IMHO. Most of them deteriorated from their audition performances.

Yeah. That’s it. Good night!

Sprainage

Filed under: Mundane, Pictures | Tags: ,

Because I’ve been disgustingly lazeh, and also distracted by the latest happenings in my life, I’m only blogging about my sprained ankle now.

Yes, I sprained my ankle. This is why I have been limping around, dragging my left foot behind me. :P

What’s a sprain? More technically, it means you ripped or partially tore a ligament. Mine was partial, because I could manage some movements with my ankle (with pain).

Happened last Monday, the 15th, when I was playing futsal with my cell! Luckily, it was at the end of the session–I got all my money’s worth, and didn’t disrupt anyone’s playing time. :DDD Though it sounds crazy, I gotta say it was kinda fun. I mean, I’ve never gotten a sprain in my whole life, so it’s an experience…

KEVIN (my cell leader) TOOK OFF HIS SMELLY FUTSAL SOCK TO TIE THE ICE PACK AROUND MY ANKLE!! D: Ewww. Everyone cracked jokes about bacteria and such… Because of the frame of mind I was in, no photos of the glorious ankle + Kevin’s smelly, sweaty sock + ice pack. But once I drove home (auto car, so I could use my right leg), dad insisted I go to the hospital to check for anything more.

X-rays declared my bones fine, but wowwww it looked like there was a golf ball under my skin.

Ladies and gentlemen (or those who know), what are the five hallmarks of inflammation again?

spraindayone

Say them with me: Calor (warmth), dolor (pain), rubor (redness), tumor (swelling) & functio laesa (loss of function).

:D I can assure you all five were present, lol.

Thus, it’s been a week since it happened, so I can partially walk now. Hopefully by Christmas (3 days!!) it’ll be ok, since I’m helping out with worship for Christmas day service. Don’t want to hobble onstage.

I also attended Comic Fiesta 2008 @ Sunway Convention Centre, which ran from 20th-21st December! How did I do it? Took a painkiller, wrapped up my sprain in a tight compression bandage for support, then pretended to walk just fine. Only went on the first day, and I MADE RAE DRESS UP ALL CUTESY! :D I also dressed up, but half-heartedly and in whatever la. Photos and a proper post of the event will appear after Christmas, because Rae wants to filter through the photos before allowing me to post. ^^;

CHRISTMAS IS COMING! :O Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!! DECK THE HALLS, BABY!

I did end up going for the One in a Million Season 3 audition yesterday at Berjaya Times Square, but I didn’t get through. Timothy Au (my fellow canticle singer and the Malaysian Josh Groban) DID get in though!!

img_0004

:DD CONGRATS TIMMY!!! AND ALL THE BEST FOR THE SECOND ROUND OF AUDITIONS!!! Now go make us proud-I’ll DEFINITELY vote for your heart-melting voice. <33 For those of you ladies who have never met Tim or heard him sing, you’re missing out. He’s got a voice like a dream, that might just steal your heart away. Unfortunately for the older ones, he’s only 18… (unless you don’t mind younger men, heh heh)

On another note, though I am slightly disappointed in myself that I got nervous and cracked during my audition.. I’M STILL GONNA KEEP ON SINGING. :DD Because I love to sing, and because God’s given me music to share. Doesn’t matter what the media likes or doesn’t like–as long as I’m good enough for you guys, I’m content.

A BIG thank you goes out to everyone who encouraged and supported me, especially Patrick, for driving me basically EVERYWHERE the whole day, and keeping me company though he didn’t sleep the night before, Jon Ng and his friend Kelvin, for coming all the way to support me in person and through multiple morale-boosting text messages then later driving me to Bangsar for my practice, Sarah for being my correspondant, encourager and fellow auditionee when I had to leave BTS for The Canticle Singers’ practice, and God, for the spirit, strength and voice that He’s given me. :)

Also, GANBATTE to my two loves, Dea-chan and Rae-chan, who are both studying hard for their exams. All the best, you two, and keep it up! Can’t wait to celebrate with you guys after your exams. I miss you two a lot. T_T We need more camwhoring sessions.

QUESTION: I need opinions on who to cosplay for the upcoming Comics Fiesta event. And if anyone wants to join me, it’ll be on the 20th – 21st of December! I’m thinking of Hagumi from Honey and Clover, Reira from NANA, the Alice monster from Ragnarok Online, or Rabi~en~Rose from Digi Charat. My only problem will be wigs… ugh.

Mummy needed to use up her Robinson’s cash vouchers, so I got me a new toy:

image029

Apparently, it’s one of the best–made specially for Asian eyes. I’ll put it to the test soon!

Mummy also had Jusco cash vouchers, so we got soba!! <3 OH SOBA, HOW I LOVE THEE.

I need to sing “Taylor, the Latte Boy” again, for a Christmas performance I’ll be doing with The Canticle Singers in December… So I have to brush up on it. My voice is weaker now, after the weeks of disuse. :/ And truth be told, the song grates on me now… But a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do!

Doing nothing makes me tired. Going to have to inject more life into my days–and give my room a major spring cleaning!

I miss all my IMU friends, now that we’re all on holidays and don’t get to see each other every day. :( It’s nice to be able to spend time with my room again instead of treating it like a hotel, but I do miss the random fun and out-of-the-blue encounters and little happenings that spawn from a day at IMU. Hope you guys are all having a wonderful time with your families and friends! Can’t wait to re-enter IMU as a 2nd-year with you guys.

Just to say I’m not dead and gone–just relishing the newfound freedom. I’ve been a bad blogger, lol. ;3 Hope you guys are enjoying your semester break too! 2 months of nothing, baby.

A quick rundown of my week after EOS2 ended on November 4th, last Tuesday:

Tuesday: Teapot Cafe for an after-EOS teatime (I had 4 scones in one go!!) & sleeeept for 12+ hours.

Wednesday: Watched Hana Yori Dango 3 the movie (“Boys over Flowers” season finale) with cousin & went to cell group at night

Thursday: MEDT 1/09 Orientation committee meeting, Timothy’s birthday karaoke at Red Box Sunway Pyramid, & Euphoria with Minny & David!

Friday: Quantum of Solace with Jon & Wei Phin, Jo Ann’s pre-birthday dinner @ Chili’s

Saturday: MUET test (I’m done with MUET, finally. It was a crap test–very badly set, in my opinion), more Teapot Cafe goodness with Jo Ann, and Wei Phin’s after-EOS BBQ

Sunday: Church, sent Jo off to the airport (KL Sentral and she took the train), napped, had rehearsal with The Canticle Singers (yes, I’ll be doing Christmas performances with them! Stay tuned for the dates, times, and venues~)

Monday: Met my mentor (Dr Mangala – a very sweet lady from India; she teaches anatomy), hung out with Minny & David, went for FUTSAL with my cell group! :)) I’ve missed futsal a lottttt.

I’m actually blogging after midnight on Monday, so it’s not *really* Tuesday the 11th yet, in my mind. More stuff to do tomorrow! The cleaning lady is coming, so I have to quickly save my room from the signs of EOS-related neglect so she can sweep and mop my floor… Right now, there are copious amounts of clothes and papers and files EVERYWHERE. *shudders*

Then, I’m watching a movie with Jae Ric, Joanne, and Kelvin… It’s some Japanese movie called 10 Promises I made to my Dog. I saw the preview before, and it looked kinda cute. We’ll see how it turns out. Later, I’ll be going to Quattro with Cecilia, Kyle, Emmy, and her friends at night. It’s that new “four seasons”-themed club/restaurant/lounge/bar thing at Avenue K, the building attached to the KLCC LRT station. I used to stop there and walk to work for 6 months last year, so I know the place. I’m not surprised a club opened up there–it’s got a lot of space, and is glitzy like that. Will post a review of the place later. :) Excited!

Okay. I think that’s it. Photos from Euphoria with Minny and David can be found on my Facebook. Clicky clicky!

Studying moments

Because studying at home or at uni gets boring (or noisy), I’ve taken to trying new places for a change of atmosphere. Previously, Starbucks was the place for summative 1 cramming. But now…

A while ago, because I had to go to KLCC to meet up with my cousin (who came back from a working stint in the UK), I discovered Kinokuniya’s Coffee Club Xpress. The in-house coffee outlet is situated on the upper floor of the bookstore, and during the daytime affords a nice, bright, airy atmosphere. It’s fairly quiet, depending on whether you miss the lunch crowd or not. Prices are cheaper than those of Coffeebean and Starbucks, and it’s a cute little place.

I had a mixed-berry tea (can’t remember what it was called). Isn’t the mug cute? :)

My teeeeeaa. xx

My teeeeeaa. xx

Recently, I’ve been patronizing good ol’ Coffeebean @ Jaya One, Section 17. That place is really developing… Quite a number of people hang out there, and I don’t feel like I’m in PJ whenever I’m inside that area. Anyway, that Coffeebean outlet is quite quiet, as it is situated near the back of the place–it’s not in the center of things like the adjacent Starbucks. The staff are very friendly, too. :) Tonight I went with Rae, since we both had work to do and I hadn’t seen her in ages!

Rae & vanilla latte.

Proof she worked hard at her report!

Proof she worked hard at her report!

Proof I studied!! Hahaha...

Proof I studied.

…but who am I kidding? :)) Here’s what we reaaaalllyyy did.

Truth.

Truth.

SO maybe we weren’t as efficient as we should have been, but it sure beats studying alone. :B (which can get boring as hell)

All power to studying with friends at nice places. With coffee or tea (or meeeee) handy.

5 days left to summative 2! All the best, my dear batchmates. We can do this. <3

Also, no prizes for guessing who, but I couldn’t resist. :)))

A new strain of acne was soon discovered on subject's face as a result of direct contact with the infamous student lounge pillows... which have been GOD KNOWS WHERE. Eww. xx

That pillow must smell GREAT.

Oh, med student life. xx

I really tried hard to give the benefit of doubt to the Seremban hospital visit for nursing week… But but but I DIDN’T SEE MUCH POINT IN IT! D:

It was partially interesting seeing the bedside charts and leafing through the admissions booklet, but I’ve seen the other stuff before, and though the largeness of the hospital was a tad overwhelming… It was boring. The ward sister we were assigned to was really nice, and she was going through everything with us with a “for the umpteeth time” atmosphere. She’s not to blame–I’d be like that too if I had to give the same tour four times consecutively, twice a year.

And to top it all off, she had her own work to see to as well.

Meh, we left early. Yay for Jon driving!

Port Dickson tomorrow… Maybe we’ll drop by the beach instead. :) Yeaaah.

Dear mum and dad,

I really, really love you both. <3

It’s hilarious how much you guys support me and make me feel so awesomely precious.

AND love everything I do no matter how stupid it may be, how careless it may be… or how mean it may be.

The prayers you guys cover me with are more than enough proof of your love for me, and I couldn’t have asked for a better set of parents (even if they are a little on the short side!).

Oh, and my brother… for being the funny guy he is. Love ya, bro.

What would I do without you guys?

Couldn’t do anything. Honestly.

:) THANK YOU GOD FOR MY FAMILY!!!!

About today’s Music & Performance Club welcoming party, I think it went pretty well! Apart from a few hiccups here and there, it was a good party/meeting. The new members were enthusiastic, and even brought some of their friends to join/sign up on the spot!

Poor Josh is sick. And so am I. And Christy. And Kay Mun. And Chloe. Haha… There must be something going around.

Hope we all get well enough for NOISE! next week. Which reminds me… I need to get those banners done.

The Pharmacy CAL Lab was…a little fulfilling, but on the whole, not that beneficial and rather boring. Get your friends to sign attendance for you–better take the time to study, unless you find it fun simulating stimulating a guinea pig’s ileum with acetylcholine. And plotting graphs.

Treasure hunters

Did our whole treasure hunt station today… Which was a tad haphazard because the initial game didn’t work out… and it STILL didn’t work out the way we wanted it to, haha. But that’s okay–I got to do what I enjoyed: BE THE NICE STATION MASTER *ahemahem*. :)))))

We got them to shave shaving cream off of balloons with eyebrow razors, hoping the balloons would pop (none of them did). If they couldn’t shave it clean enough, the first penalty would be that one of their group members gets the “joker face” drawn on him. The next penalty was that the hairiest guy would get his leg hair shaved–one strip of it.

Some of the groups came smelling like fishwater… :( Poor things!

I was nerdy and asked them first aid questions before giving them the appropriate clue and relic, if applicable. La la la~

Jo gave marks, and then made the last group (group 1) sing. Well, at least 1 guy sang. William, I believe.

Right. We finished up around 8-ish while they all left to hunt for the treasure. We spent over RM50 for our icebreakers and treasure hunt combined! So we each had to fork out about RM9 for the stuff we bought.

All in all, I hope they enjoyed some measure of the treasure hunt… Even though they had to go through so much crap at the other stations.

I really need to seriously study.

Soaked and Aching

So, the ME2/08 orientation has begun! The juniors came in on Monday, the 25th of August. The group planning sessions were on Tuesday, and the wet icebreakers were today. Jon, Wei Phin, Jo Ann, Benedict, Eunice, Joey, and myself ran station 4. On a scale of 10, the fun was maybe about 6 or 7. I mean, the game went well, and we had a winner each time, etc… But there weren’t any “highlight” moments, if you know what I mean. There was plenty of water, though. And fragmented serviettes, EWW.

Dry icebreakers were pretty fun to watch–at least the beginning that I stayed for. Hope the juniors enjoyed the evening!

Jo, Jon & I were supposed to go to Euphoria later for Vinod’s birthday thing, but we came out of the icebreakers feeling tired, hungry… and not up for it. Bleeeaaah. I now face my AIR topic. Thankfully, it’s not that hard–the information we have to condense is already quite condensed.

OH, and I taught the first first aid class today… It was a little nerve-wracking having to talk to about 20 people alone, and I don’t think I did a very good job, especially when it came to the wound-bandaging demo. x__x; At least Esther will be around tomorrow! A quick review of the previous day would suffice and work well to kick off the session.

Treasure hunt is Friday evening… And that session’s gonna be pretty messy. Brrr.

As for foundation 2, I only have one thing to say: SUCK.

:( I only have ONE favourite lecturer at present. ONE. And he isn’t even a science-y lecturer.

Nothing’s gone into my head. I feel like no matter how much I read/study/slave over my books, I don’t know anything of substance. It leaks out of my head. I really, really miss foundation 1. /hugs Netter’s

My studying plan is semi-successful… Jia you!

JON AND JO ANN. I’M GONNA GET THAT ONE WEEK OF FREE DINNER K. :DDD (Jon, you know why.)

Awesomeee. All out of rant. Back to dermatophytes now.

I only got one week left.

Then,

BLISS. JOY. FREEEEEEDOM.

For a little while, then a day of COP & writing the report.

Study hard, my friends! Let us conquer our first exam victoriously!

———————————-

Sze Yin & I counted something today, teehee. Our batch is faaaast. <3

I’m telling myself to wait, but my heart says another thing.

———————————-

Something’s on my mind: What does a kiss on the hand from the opposite sex mean to you, ladies? Would you let anyone do it? Is it a sign or affection, adoration, or nothing at all?

As for me, I thought it wouldn’t affect me. But when someone kissed my hand during a song choreography at practice tonight, I felt disturbed. I just didn’t like it. It suddenly dawned upon me I didn’t want anyone but the man I love kissing my hand–whether he does it or not is another thing. =/ It felt private, personal, and off-limits. Maybe it’s because I don’t feel friendly towards this person just yet, because another person gives me weird vibes as well.

“…jing hai jou hei.” – It’s just play-acting. A fakery. But I don’t want to.

BACK TO INTEGRATED METABOLISM & BIOCHEMISTRY.

Good night.

:DDD Yayyy it’s over! The official press conference and launch of the production–I sang, and Geoffrey Woo sang too. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, although I was extremely nervous throughout. A big thank you to everyone who came to support me & the show, since you had to come all the way to Times Square from your other engagements! Mummy was there too. <3

Today (or rather, yesterday, since I’m blogging after midnight) was the OFFICIAL LAUNCH of the broadway musical medley I’m part of, called A Grand Night for Singing! Thomas Chia, I salute you.

……………………………. <——(this signifies silent, silent, deadly panic)

DDDDDDD:

HOMGZ I NEED TO STUFF THINGS INTO MY BRAIN LYKE NOW AND KEEP THEM THAR.

I sat in the library all day until my behind hurt and I developed lower back pain…(AGING. I get it.) I mean, I’m doing moderately okay right now with revision and all–I believe I’ll pull through, but there’s something I want to achieve.

Thought of the day: Maybe I won’t achieve it because God wants to teach me something. Painful lesson, but if it is what I think it is, I’m bracing for it… ~_~ I can’t have everything.

The fluffy haze hasn’t completely cleared, but it will by the time I hit Semester 6. :)

————————

For the reflective part of my day, let’s just say that boys (men, if you so desire) aren’t wired the same way girls are. At all. Sigh. Some things get lost in translation when you communicate with them. It’s funny if you step back and examine the situation, but at the same time, it’s distressing for both sides. Here we go.

Boy likes Girl and pursues her. Girl suspects Boy likes her. Girl doesn’t really feel the same way. Girl drops counter-hints (discouraging) to the hints Boy is dropping. Boy gets perturbed and speaks up. Girl tells him. Boy tries again. Girl says no. Boy is sad and demonstrates his sorrow.

ULTIMATELY, under normal circumstances, one of two things could happen:

a) Girl feels bad and consoles Boy, and ends up dating him out of guilt. Boy wins.

b) Girl selfishly gets on with her life and leaves Boy to dwell in his sorrow. Girl wins.

The third option, a rare one, occurs if both are fantastically logical and objective individuals:

c) Boy realizes he is being silly. Girl sees that he realizes he is being silly. Both laugh about the situation, and end up becoming good friends, not lovers. :) Both win.

Tell me you didn’t feel a twinge of familiarity.

p/s – Congrats to all Sem 2s who passed!! For those who didn’t… fight fight! All the best for re-sits, and don’t let the failure get you down. <3 You still have a chance~

Mummy and daddy are coming home on Saturday! Also, there’s a birthday celebration on Saturday night that I’m attending… SO, present-shopping tomorrow with Rae-baby’s help!

Cell group was really, really good yesterday. The church I belong to has been doing a cat & dog theology series, (which is fascinating, by the way) and yesterday was a debriefing/Q&A session. I really enjoy Kevin & Adele’s teachings–they always make sense to me, and there’s just something about them that puts me at ease. They have a really strong sense of peace and “togetherness” that infiltrates the cell. If you want to talk about God-ordained or truly blessed, it’s Kev&Del! They really bless after they’ve been blessed. :D I luv Jars of Clay, my cell group~ (anyone interested in visiting can drop me a line; we meet in TTDI every Wednesday night, 8.30-10.30pm)

Had a good talk with Adele yesterday. About boys.

:) It was a really good talk, in the deep, meaningful sense.

I love med school wayyy too much. Even on the weekends, I miss the library. But there’re a lot of people that I miss, actually, that I haven’t gotten to see or talk to much since my semester started. :( You know who you are!!

On a random thought… I need to start doing my AIR topic. I will not have any time to do it later, what with my practices increasing and studying also probably increasing.

I don’t see him anymore. He doesn’t have a reason to be around, and I don’t have a reason to be around either. It’s a good thing, though, because that lessens the *dundundun drumroll* temptation! Ha. Jo Ann, your hippo is good enough… And when he’s not around, Xiao Wen, your bear’s next. >D
