Previously, I blogged about the IMU Ball ’08 (Sensationale Symphony) & the IMU Ball ’09 (Clair de Lune).
This time around, it’s my ball, the IMU Ball 2010 : AUDACIEUX / dare to be, held at the Taming Sari Ballroom, Royale Chulan, Kuala Lumpur. :))) Carries a lot of significance and great memories. Of time spent in this little, converted shopping-mall-of-a-place for two and a half years, mugging medical books.

A great many things transpired prior to this amazing event–one being that I was part of the fantabulous organizing committee, and two being that myself, Ben & Joash won the IMU’s Got Talent 2010 as a three-piece outfit, Cadenza; the third was that myself & Yaw Shing were one of the final pairs in the running for Prom King & Queen and had to practice this insane tango slash swing routine for our performance in three days (kudos to Abang Linobear for helping us with the end choreography!). The convo mag was another part of my hectic life during that period, as well as attempting to pull through my Sem 5 studies.
The theme was such that one was pulled into a romantic, risque casino life, that dared you to be all that you were and more. Audaciously. :) Hues of red, black, white, and dramatic feathers alighted the tables, along with stacks of playing cards. Poker chips lay strewn about, and bags of untold goodies waited patiently to be claimed on the chairs.
Time was frozen that night; all concern for studies was momentarily stashed away, whilst glittering, gauzy, evening ballgowns were drawn out of their closets, ready to adorn their owners. Sleek bowties and sharp suits were strapped on, complete with dangerous leather formals, primed for the dancefloor.
The crowd of IMU were indeed a sight to behold as they spilled into the foyer, where fire-eaters, magicians, and snazzy lures of jackpot wins awaited them. When the doors opened, the night progressed with a modest 5-course meal, whilst onstage, death-defying acrobats flipped stunts and played out acts closely tied to their Eastern roots. Flashy, all-smiles dance troupes spun and shimmied to bright, Vegas-inspired numbers in-between the nostalgic, sobering grad videos.
The night climaxed with a surprise appearance by Yusri, IMU’s reigning Michael Jackson–the next dance number, aptly using Lady Gaga’s Poker Face riled the crowd up even more, who were further encouraged by the intoxication slowly building up over the consumption of wine. Finally, the King & Queen of the night–Daniel & Lauren (M208) were crowned, and the dancefloor opened. First, teems of couples held each other, swaying in time to the music, before the louder, clubbier undertones broke through and a party atmosphere overtook the ballroom.
It didn’t end there; once the deejay tired of spinning his tunes, those ready to take on the night stripped off their fancier togs and slipped into changes for the afterparty, at Space, Asian Heritage Row. Neons, minis, loosely-buttoned dress shirts and fabrics that would never see daylight were the order; a significant transformation took place.
:) I’d say the night ended whenever you wanted it to–or when you passed out from sheer exhaustion. It’d do you well to have had good friends watching out for you, in case the alcohol and dancing was too much for your soul–or you carelessly had too much of a good thing in one go.
For me, it started with friends, and ended with friends–family appeared in-between, and so did those close to my heart.
It’s a sweet memory, yet slightly bitter, stained by the knowledge that this ball marked the end of my fun and games. Doctorhood awaits, along with its long and winding road, filled wih exams, assessments, tough learning curves, and heartbreaks. Still, it’s worth it. :) And why? It’s all part of the Bigger Purpose. None of this would have come to pass if not for Him watching over all you and I have done. It’s simply amazing.
Thank you for being a part of this memory.
